Did you know that cats and dogs can get arthritis, heart disease and other respiratory problems?  Well, they do and it’s caused by being overweight or obese.1 out of 4 cats and dogs are overweight in the United States.  October 9, is National Pet Obesity Awareness Day.  79% of dog owners and 69% of cat owners don’t realize that their pet is overweight.    In 2010 the chance of getting diabetes for dogs, rose 32% since 2006. The chance for cats getting diabetes rose 16%.

  1. I had no Idea that dogs and cats could get diabetes and I also did not know that they had a day dedicated to it. I have 2 cats and 1 of them is kind of fat and she looks gigantic next to the tiny new cat that we got…

  2. Oh my! I had no idea that so many pets where overweight. Do you know how you can tell if your pet is physically healthy? Thank you for posting this. I will need to keep this in mind.

    • I am not sure how to tell if your pet is healthy but I think that if you have a cat then you should feel around where the ribs are and if you and feel them then it is about the right weight.
